Hello Blog! The quote “The concept of a genuine style becomes transparent in the culture industry as the aesthetic equivalent of power” (Adorno and Horkheimer 57) really struck me. For the past few days, I’ve been trying to think of something that is actually original, and if authenticity or a “genuine” style really exists in our late stage capitalist society. What Adorno is saying here is very true though - people, especially celebrities, who have a unique “style” tend to have a lot of followers and supporters for showing their “uniqueness”. One example that comes to mind is Harry Styles. His fan base scare me a little bit, I’m not going to lie. His popularity rose a lot after he did the dress photoshoot for Vogue back in 2020. Reading: “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction” by Walter Benjamin Before arriving to class, I found this reading rather confusing because the language Benjamin uses is very technical. I find it insightful to hear what my peers understood of the work as it clarifies my own reading of the work. The biggest takeaway from this reading was the changing relationship between art and the viewer and, although Benjamin is writing of his experience in the 1930s, his observations about technology are still relevant today. The first conversation from class that I would like to address concerns the following quote from Benjamin; “the presence of the original is the prerequisite to the concept of authenticity.” There are two opinions that arise from this concept of originality and authenticity; recreations of an original work of art does not hold its value or the value of art is in the viewer not the authenticity of the work. "The explosion of narrativity depends upon a technology that is unlike print and unlike the electronic media of the first age: it is cheap, flexible, readily available, and quick." (p.449) I decided to use this quote from the Poster chapter to highlight an essential aspect of this technological and cultural web that we created. The speed at which information is transmitted across the globe has its positives and negatives. I want to talk specifically about the negatives. Putting out content and having an audience see the content instantly is a gift and a curse. If a user wants to spread a narrative good or bad it has the ability to spark up like wildfire. The more people view or like the content the fast it spreads. The number of people who see this content grows exponentially until everyone has heard about it.
