Critical Frameworks Pre Class Blog: Answering the Question: What is Post-Modernism?
Hello Blog!
I found the reading on “Answering the Question” What is Post-Modernism/ Note on the Meaning of ‘Post-‘ “ a lot more difficult than other readings we have done honestly. However, due to how difficult it was to conceptualize in my head I read it over numerous times which led me questioning all sorts of things. For instance, the opposition between:
postmodernism vs. modernism.
Lyotard describes the difference to be “the disappearance of the close bond that linked the project of modern architecture to an ideal of the progressive real of social and individual emancipation encompassing all humanity” (47)
From my understanding, postmodernism can be characterized as the reaction against modernism in a way. With modernism is was a radical break and big change from transitions. Whereas post modernism is the known use of styles created before it’s time with conscious thought in mind. For visual representation, I personally picture this as modernism being in bold and post modernism being in italics.
postmodernism vs. modernism
One of the first things I think of when talking about the difference between postmodernism and modernism is the art. Both of these times were influenced by the Enlightenment. Therefore, science had been more so introduced and favored over faith and tradition. Furthermore, this all led up to the first and second World War which also changed the art movement. In the form of art pieces I believe the following artworks are wonderful demonstrations of these 2 different periods in the same century:
“The Art Institute of Chicago” by Grant Wood (1930) The image above is a representation of modernistic art. Art during modernism often reflected simplicity and elegance. Artists worked towards the an idealization at the time on what beauty is defined by. |
“Without title” by Aldo Spoldi (1983)
This art work above is a representation of art during post-modernism. In contrast, during this time period it ofted rejected the original premise on how to do art and that there is no right way. It focuses on relevant topics and is often intended to generate buzz. |
Ultimately, nowadays I feel like we do art in a way that draws from both modernism and post-modernism. It is an interesting concept to think about and apply to our everyday lives. Now looking at art works what I will focus on it how these images draw inspiration from these 2 different times in our word.
