Critical Frameworks Post-Class Blog
Dear Blog,
Our Thursday class consisted of talking about “Postmodern Virtualities” by Poster. These types of topics have always been of interest to me because of how socially relevant and applicable they are to my current life. We live in the age of technology. We are consumed by it. We are addicted TO it. It is crazy to think about it’s effects on our world. An aspect of this which poster focused on was the idea of freedom of speech online. In class, we discussed some of the pros and cons of being anonymous online. For example, a pro could be posting without fear of judgement and a con could be hatred being spread more easily. A quote from Poster which left me thinking was:
“Virtual reality better than real” - Poster
I feel like this quote is insinuating that if we are in control of the world we live in via a virtual reality, it will make us happy. For example, with 4D movie theatres it creates an experience which makes things more real. This connects with Lyotard with his idea of verisimilitude which is the appearance of being true.
Moreover, Poster also states:
“Technology has taken a turn that defines the character of power of modern governments” (537) – Poster
Technology is honestly taking over the world. I am not even saying that jokingly. According to the facts, technology is becoming an entity with great power. We use technology so much in our lives that it is a large part of our modern government. We trust science (at least most of us do), therefore we trust technology. Hence, if technology is a present force in our modern government in their regulations we will inherently put for faith and trust into them. Thus, this makes me question the extent to which we can trust technology? How will our trust in technology eventually “screw us over”? At what point will we stop with technology….will it gain its own conscious?
Signing off,
