Hello Blog let's contemplate some culture
Structuralism is very interesting to me and I feel like iconic areas take advantage of this style. We rarely remember places with traditionally shaped buildings. When buildings are too similar there is no identity or personality in a community. When I drive around central Florida all the buildings look the same. I argue we need more structuralism in our communities.
I remember growing up seeing a perfect example of structuralism and as a kid, I never knew the point of the building. I assumed that a bad storm would destroy the building due to its unique style.
The Swedish flag is because it's right next to an Ikea. This building uses the absent center to allow energy to flow through the building. Although it can make people feel uneasy or unsafe around the building. Almost like Jenga, you wouldn't want a skyscraper to have an unstable design like this. The purpose of the structure was not only for aesthetic reasons but also functional. This building was originally built to be an office space. Having a gap between the top and bottom of the building allowed for less noise to be transmitted from the upper office side and the lower lobby. This building shows that you can mix design and structuralism with purpose and functionality.
For the longest time, this building was actually unowned and unused due to its unique design. Every building around it is regularly shaped and it's also set right in front of an Ikea. Until Ikea utilized its Avant Garde style to attract customers by using it as a space for ads. Finally, the building will be used as a hotel and one of the first hotels in the United States that will be zero net energy. All energy will be produced in house.
