"We see that victory always comes down to the same thing things get hierarchical."
I decided to use this quote from Cixous because it made me think of another quote that I heard recently which was, "Science advances one funeral at a time." I feel like these two quotes are extremely relatable, especially if we replace the word science with society, "Society advances one funeral at a time." In other words, things, movements, cultures, etc. advance when the opposition no longer exists. When there is no one to defend the ways of the past, we are able to move forward into the future. It is unfortunate that this is the case, but I believe it to be true. If we think about the evolution of the civil rights movement, the initial change was brought on by activism, awareness, education, and courage stemming from African American communities and figures like Malcolm X and MLK. As time went on, and decades passed, there was much less resistance to change. Why? Well, we could say that this is because most of those opposed to the change were members of an older generation, so did they become more accepting as time went on? Or did we see less oppression because they had died? In no way am I trying to take away from the accomplishments of the Civil Rights movement and its leaders, without their activism and sacrifice our society wouldn't be the way it is today, which is way more accepting than in the past. I'm just saying there are multiple factors that got us to where we are, one of them being the fact that most of the racist people got old and died. Obviously, we still see hate groups like the Proud Boys and similar neo-nazi organizations like the KKK, but they are much less powerful than they were in the past. Let me know what you think of this.
