Hey blog, let's contemplate some culture
Umberto Eco talks a lot about hyperreality and how we almost live in a fake reality that aims to do supply more to humans than just the world we live in. That cities aren't real cities but practically commercials we walk through always encouraging us to spend our money and be a part of capitalism. Whereas cities in Europe don't experience this same reality of every building aiming to sell you something, rather they have actual soul and life.
"Disneyland is also a place of total passivity. Its visitors must agree to behave like robots." 205
Disneyland creates a hyperrealistic world that is fully in control by the park owners. While Disney creates this illusion of adventure and experiencing the unknown, in actuality everything is preplanned. You follow every path, every line, and every direction given to you whether you know it or not. Visitors are almost programmed like robots to follow every direction given to them.
"Disneyland tells us that technology can give us more reality than nature can." 203
We as humans want to believe that hyper reality can become a true reality. Via Disney media, everyone has always wanted to be in a live fairy tale. Escapism is the goal to escape the reality you are currently living in and many people find that in Disney. We want the reality we cannot have thus we search for it via technology. We can control technology and mold it into our wants. If humanity wants a talking mouse we can provide that but nature cannot. We as humans cannot control nature, thus technology provides the reality we want to be true. Disney also takes advantage of the fact that they supply an experience like no other due to this hyperreality. Many will make yearly pilgrimages to Disney from around the world regardless of the cost.
