Colin's Cultural Contemplation Baudrillard

Hey blog, let's contemplate some culture

I think it's interesting that we as humans like to simulate reality a lot. Even though the reality is all around us, were always more interested in what we can't have rather than what we do have. Sometimes we buy into simulation more than our own reality. We love the idea to escape from what we have but that in itself is an abusive idea. Rather than working towards escaping it we as humans should build a better reality.

“To dissimulate is to pretend not to have what one has.  To simulate is to feign to have what one doesn’t have. One implies a presence, the other an absence.”  389

By dissimulating what you have you just remove it from your life. If something is simulated you assume that means it isn't real, or not a part of true reality. Whereas it's impossible for something to be completely out of reality thus your just pretending to not have what you truly have. Although to simulate you create something that isn't truly there. Look at Disney world and its parks, it simulates a wild adventure through a fairy tale. In reality, it's all simulated with robots and fake scenery.

“Disneyland exists in order to hide the fact that it is the ‘real’ country. . . . Disneyland is presented as imaginary in order to make us believe that the rest is real . . .” 393

Disney plays the role of a real live fairy tale where all your dreams come true. The whole Disney media basically recycles the same story of triumph over evil and always getting a good ending. Where the people are magical and pure of heart. This does not exist in the real world and you'll find it's not nearly as black and white.
