"In countries where the levers of power are in the hands of state bureaucracy, the monopolistic control over the media, often supplemented by official censorship, makes it clear that the media serves the ends of the dominant elite." (p. 204)
I decided to use this quote because it pretty much sums up what our country has developed into over the last century, a bureaucratic monopolistic oligarchy designed to look like a democracy or republic. A tiny percentage of rich elites own almost all of today's media sources. No matter what political stance a network might take, it has been designed by the oligarchs as a tool for propaganda and narrative generation. When one person or a single family owns and controls a "news network", it is not truly a news network. The news should be independent of any political stance or any kind of opinion regarding current events, otherwise, it's not really a news network; they are just giving us their opinion in the form of a news network. Instead of "Here is what is happening in your city today." they should be saying "here is our personal opinion of your city, which we base on everyone else's opinion of your city". News networks today are a joke, especially the ones that are essentially a massive echo chamber for either the right or the left (Fox and CNN). Even the other so-called independent news networks struggle to deliver real facts to the public, a majority of their news is hearsay. If it wouldn't hold up in a court of law, why is it being televised to millions of people across the country? Because the news is propaganda, that's why. Additionally, if our government didn't want our media networks to act like this, they would have already censored them and tried to de-platform their networks. But since the networks were probably instructed by our government to act in this way, our government plays dumb and acts like they have nothing to do with it. Fortunately, we are beginning to find evidence of our government manipulating elections and general information through Twitter, so I hope we start to see more and more evidence. Only time will tell.
