   Reading: Butler "Gender Trouble"

I have frequently surrounded myself by text that discusses the existence and influence of gender on the conditions within which people are able to exist. We often see in this line of education text that calls all people "men" because there is a lack of intersectionality, or the view of all aspects of an individual, during our discussion of culture. Some of the most important players in cultural history have been women but our misogyny continues even in the 21st century when only the male players of history are discussed. Another area of sexuality and feminism that Butler discusses is the general lack of intersectionality within feminism itself which can be ascribed to the lack of consideration of all aspects of women. For example, if you are a woman, then that is the only important aspect of your identity, without including your race, sexual orientation, age, ability, education, or many other important aspects of your identity. Butler also states that all women have experienced the anxiety that arises when you attempt to speak out in a crowd of men. This is an experience that all women, despite their other identities, have faced because history dictates that women, and children, should be seen but not heard. This sexist attitude may not longer be outwardly accepted in society, but it still exists and Butler is the first of our writers to address it.
