Saffron, Jameson Pre

Reading: Jameson "The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism"

The primary topic of this reading by Jameson is the existence of capitalism within culture and the influence of that relationship on the people living in that culture. I recognized a similar theme in this reading to the previous reading by Jameson earlier in the semester where there is a priority of the "cult of the new" that exists to promote novelty. Connecting this cult of novelty to the relationship between culture and capitalism, we can see that capitalism promotes people's buying of new things creating a culture in which new things are seen as superior. This means that people are encouraged to continue to spend money, increasing the value of their economy and making their culture continue to appreciate novelty. Overall, I had a difficult time fully understanding this reading, but because we have already discussed Jameson in class before, I applied what I already knew about him to this reading as well.
