Modernity and Change 9/15/22

Modernity is inevitable to me because it is no different than change. Three things in life you cannot avoid is tax, death, and change. I think the whole point of neoconservatism and traditionalism is to fight change whether its good or bad.

"I have read a thinker of repute who defends modernity against those he calls the neoconservatives. Under the banner of postmodernism, the latter would like, he believes, to get rid of the uncompleted project of modernism, that of the Enlightenment." - Lyotard

I think change and modernity is what drives our culture and capitalism. The new iphone only lasts a couple months before your no longer as interested in it and ready for the next upgrade. To me modernity is exactly like this, a constant cycle of waiting for the next upgrade. Things rarely ever end there's always a better version being made.

The pull towards religion is that its probably the best example of traditionalism. Religion is like a rock and doesnt change that much. Of course there have been changes over the years to books like the Bible but its quite rare. Constant change and modernity is taxing on the system and sets your brain up to always be looking for the next version. Religion has also been around for so long thus it gains validity. Modernity means untested and its the unknown that scares people away.

To say we should completely go back to traditionalism is to say the system is perfect, which isnt true. The reason modernity exists is because people want to change the world around them in their image for better or for worse.

Its important that societies find a mix between modernity and traditionalism. Without modernity there is no progress or creativity but without traditionalism humans become slaves to the new with little fulfillment in what they have.
