Reading: Lyotard “Answering the Question: What is Postmodernism?”
Lyotard outlines many aspects of postmodernism in this reading including the first definition of the term outside of art. During our class discussion, we discussed many of his views on the rapid move away from modernism through his quotations. On the largest takeaways I have after reading Lyotard myself and our conversation during class was his view that "the appropriate remedy for the anxiety and depression the public experiences." According to this statement, we see that Lyotard has strong views on the condition of people's mental conditions as a whole rather than individual struggles. In other words, he sees that the rapid shift to postmodernism insights a culture-wide response of depression rather than attributing those characteristics to individuals. Another important aspect of his writing that we discussed during class was his classification of the three types of conservatives; 1. young conservatives, 2. old conservatives, and 3. neoconservatives. Most of the statements he makes about culture defines people according to their conservative orientation.
